Academic Discourse for Graduate Students (ADG)


›› ADG 400 | Orientation

This five-week course is designed to provide international students with an introduction to graduate-level study at Benedictine University and to the BU community. Students will become comfortable with key aspects of the academic culture and community of the University, will be provided with support and information for various aspects of academics and life both on- and off-campus, and will build confidence and skills through interaction with members of the Benedictine University community. [0 credits]
Fall.

 

›› ADG 401 | Introduction to the American Graduate Classroom

This ten-week course for international non-native speakers of English focuses on the development of advanced reading, writing, classroom, and study skills for graduate disciplines. Assessment of student work is by portfolio submission. [3 credits]
Pre- or co-requisite: ADG 400.
Fall.

 

›› ADG 402 | Success in the American Graduate Classroom

This ten-week course is designed for international non-native speakers of English concurrently undertaking graduate studies. Focus is on continued advanced skills development through the supervised completion of a research project and related presentation in the student's graduate field. [3 credits]
Prerequisites: ADG 400; ADU 401 or placement through IPO evaluation.
Spring.

 

›› ADG 411 | Academic Skills Lab (5 weeks)

Sequence of lab sessions designed to support and consolidate speaking and listening skills. Five weeks. [1.5 credits]
Pre- or co-requisites: ADG 400; ADG 401 or 402.
Repeatable for credit.
Periodically.

 

›› ADG 412 | Individual and Small-Group Study Lab

Sequence of study groups and activities that support academic skills across the curriculum. Five weeks. [1.5 credits]
Pre- or co-requisites: ADG 400; ADG 401 or 402.
Repeatable for credit.
Periodically.

 

›› ADG 413 | Self-Guided Skills Lab

Sequence of individual study sessions using on-line and other self-paced materials. Five weeks. [1.5 credits]
Pre- or co-requisites: ADG 400; ADG 401 or 402.
Repeatable for credit.
Periodically.

 

›› ADG 414 | Advanced Academic Skills Lab

Sequence of study groups and activities that support advanced academic skills across the curriculum. Five weeks. [1.5 credits]
Pre- or co-requisites: ADG 400; ADG 401 or 402.
Repeatable for credit.
Periodically.
