The major and minor in literature

An undergraduate major in English Language and Literature prepares students for challenging careers in teaching, law, publishing, professional writing, and advertising/public relations, among many other possibilities. Combining the literature major with another major, such as education, biology, or communications, can make students stronger applicants for graduate or professional school and give them a leg up in a competitive job market.

To learn more about the requirements for majoring and minoring in English Language and Literature, please select one of the following:

›› The literature major

›› The literature major with teaching certifcation/a minor in secondary education

›› The literature major for pre-law students

›› The literature minor

Majors and minors receive careful guidance from advisors to select courses both within and outside of the literature program in order to plan a program of study that meets their individual educational and career goals.

Henry David Thoreau

“A truly good book teaches me better than to read it. I must soon lay it down, and commence living on its hint. What I began by reading, I must finish by acting.”

–Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
