News: Department to follow new university admistrative drop policy
12/10/07 | Beginning with the spring 2008 semester, all classes offered by the Department of Language and Literature will be governed by the university’s new Administrative Drop Policy.
Policy:
Undergraduate students who fail to attend class sessions during the first week of a course may be automatically dropped for non-attendance.
-
To avoid being administratively dropped from a course, a student must request permission to remain in the course despite missing classes during the first week of the semester. Permission must be requested from the instructor of the course and the Department Chair (or Program Director) prior to the first class meeting.
-
Such requests must be made in writing (by hard copy or by e-mail), must specify which dates during the first week of classes would be missed, and must provide the reason for the proposed absence. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the request is received.
-
Upon receipt of a request, the instructor (or Department Chair or Program Director) shall notify the student as to whether his/her request has been granted. This shall be done in writing prior to the end of the first week of classes.
Intent:
The primary intent of the Administrative Drop Policy is to ensure full enrollment in courses in which demand for seats exceeds supply. The purpose is to free seats held by non-attending students in such courses, so that students who wish to take the course may be able to do so.
