What role will democracy play in shaping the futures of Asia, Africa?

Nikhil Pal Singh, Ph.D., is a historian of race, empire and culture in 20th century United States. He argues that democracy is a process that is constantly being questioned and challenged in the ongoing fight for justice in the United States and around the world.

Singh argues that the civil rights movement was not just about African Americans’ struggle for quality, but the question of whether the basic values of the United States were achievable for all. This question is equally significant to our encounters with the Asian and African worlds and the role democracy will play in shaping their futures.

Singh, an Associate Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis and History, and Director of the Program in American Studies at New York University, will present “Democratic Possibilities in the Afro-Asian Century” at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 12 in the Krasa Center Presentation Room.

Singh’s visit is sponsored by the Global Studies Forum at Benedictine University. The Global Studies major combines the school’s unique cultural heritage sequence with courses from a number of disciplines to provide students with an understanding of the forces that are shaping the world and prepare them to act as responsible citizens in the 21st century.
