General Academic Schedule:
First Week: Introduction to Program and a tour of Washington
D.C.
Meet and greet and orientation in Washington D.C. and a tour
of the city.
Visit to U.S. State Department.
Tour of Capital Hill
Visit to various museums including the National Gallery of Art
& the National Air & Space Museum.
Second Week: Introductions and Orientations; Begin Leadership
Training
Arrive at Benedictine University.
Orientation and overview of program.
Campus tour and introduction to academic materials and services.
Orientation to U.S. culture and customs and life on campus at
Benedictine University.
Start leadership studies: Introduction to leadership training and
group dynamics.
Group volunteer project, travel to Morton Arboretum and learn
about service projects.
Art Institute of Chicago Tour
Academic lessons about Leadership qualities.
Third Week: Leadership in a Diverse Society
Sessions on managing diversity, effective communication &
creating innovation.
Travel to Center for Middle East Studies, University of Chicago,
and also tour the hospital.
Workshops on Follow On Project
Volunteer work at Habitat for Humanity
Fourth Week: Travel to the West Coast: San Francisco Trip
Visit Silicon Valley, Stanford University, the University of
California, Berkeley. Focus on leadership and diversity.
Tour San Francisco including China Town, Federal Reserve Bank,
Mayors and County Commissioner Offices, and Alcatraz Island: Discussion of America's criminal justice
system.
Visit to Muir Woods & discussion on environmental conservation.
Travel back to Benedictine University & dinner at President
Carroll's House..
Fifth Week: Challenge of Political Equality: Study Trip of
Abraham Lincoln & Emancipation and the qualities of Leadership
Discussion of US Constitution & Federalism.
Travel and tour Springfield, IL, capitol of IL.
Visit Chicago Tribune, First Amendment museum.
Sessions on development of Women's rights.
Travel to World Vision Headquarters, Chicago. Volunteer work
at warehouse.
Tour of South Chicago -- focus on development of civil rights
for African Americans.
Home stay with Benedictine staff & faculty.
Sixth Week: Challenge of Religious Freedom and Tolerance
Discussion and seminars on America's long history of religious
issues and landmark court cases.
Leadership Wrap Up & Challenge of Federalism: Need for Political
Leadership/ Campus Forum.
Sessions on business policy & environment/ politics of environmentalism.
Volunteer project with Georgetown.
Travel to U.S. Senator Dick Durbin's office.
Farewell dinner with faculty and staff.
Seventh Week: Study Tour to Boston and Washington D.C.
Orientation: Freedom Trail
Tour the Kennedy Library and Museum.
Visit Kennedy School of Government and Harvard University.
Boston University -- session on inter-religious dialogue and
peace.
Travel back to Washington D.C., visit Arab-American Institute, and have a program wrap-up and
farewell dinner.
