What to Bring

Clothes

Pack enough clothes for your 6 week stay in the United States. Chicago during the summer time is mostly very hot and humid so you will want to pack light, cotton clothing for hot weather. Summer thunderstorms and rain showers are also extremely common so you will want to pack rain gear for these occasions. Make sure you bring an umbrella, you will more than likely use it. You will also be traveling to San Francisco which is a little cooler than the Chicago area due to its situation on the bay. You will want to pack a light jacket as temperatures can drop suddenly during the night in the San Francisco bay area. Pack one formal wear as well as you may want to visit a formal gathering or a dinner at a more formal restaurant. In general the 6 week program will be mostly informal. Make sure you pack at least one pair of very comfortable walking shoes as you will be walking a lot.

Don’t forget to bring a pair of cloths that can be comfortably worn during outside volunteer activities and can get dirty. Also make sure you have a pair of shoes other than sandals which can be used in similar volunteer activities and would be appropriate to be worn on construction sites and nature trails.

Very important: When packing for traveling inside the United States, you cannot carry with you onto the airplane any liquids in bottles larger than 3 ounces (about 89 mililiters). Also, all liquid bottles must be able to fit in a one quart size clear, plastic bag (about 1 liter size). One plastic bag is permitted per person. The airport authorities will discard bottles larger than than size-- so you will be forced to throw away that nice cologne or shampoo. You may pack larger liquid containers in your bags that you check. See the link for the "3-1-1" rule at http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm.
