Today’s land use and project development issues are more complex than ever. Public officials and community residents need a greater understanding of the development process and issues that require specific industry knowledge.

Gain a better grasp on land use and development!

This course is designed to assist local and elected officials, community leaders and other professionals understand economic development. The two-day program involves case studies, interactive classroom exercises, small group discussions, guest speakers and experienced insight that will provide a fundamental understanding of economic development. You will learn:
• The development process and achieving a common ground with developers
• Using market assessment and development strategies to gauge opportunities
• The ins and outs of financing development including funding sources and incentives
• How to gain community support and work together

The program will also include a field trip to The Glen in Glenview, a model mixed-use
development on the site of the former Glenview Naval Air Station.

Instructor
Michael F. Mallon is the founder, president and principal of Mallon and Associates, Inc., a real estate and development company headquartered in Wheaton that focuses on retail developments throughout the Midwest. Mallon earned a degree in urban planning
from Michigan State University and was the director of planning and zoning for the Village of Lombard before embarking upon a lengthy career in retail development for both Jewel/Osco and Dominick’s.
Mallon has lectured at John Marshall Law School, Roosevelt University, Benedictine University, DePaul, the University of Illinois, Purdue and the University of Illinois-Chicago.
