Windows 2000 Professional


Product Information

Built on Windows NT® technology and the easy-to-use, familiar Windows® 98 user interface, Windows 2000 Professional gives business users increased flexibility. The integrated Web capabilities let you connect to the Internet from anywhere, at anytime—giving you access to host of flexible, cost-effective communications options. In addition, broad peripheral and mobile computer support make Windows 2000 Professional an ideal operating system for a workforce that increasingly relies on notebook computers. Further, you will particularly appreciate the reliability and manageability enhancements that make desktop management simpler and more efficient.


System Requirements

  • PC with a Pentium 133 MHz or higher processor (300 MHz recommended)
  • 64 MB of RAM or higher
  • 2 GB of available hard-disk space with a minimum of 650 MB of freespace

You can upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional from Windows 95 or Window 98. Or, if necessary, you can install a new copy. Preinstallation information is located in the file read1st.txt in the folder \english\win2000\pro. System requirements information is located in the files pro1.txt and pro2.txt in the folder \english\win2000\pro\setuptxt. The file pro2.txt discusses your choice of file system. The NTFS file system is the recommended file system for use with Windows 2000. Please consult the Windows Hardware Compatibility List at www.microsoft.com/hcl or www.microsoft.com/windows2000/compatible for the latest list of supported devices.


Software Installation

IMPORTANT: We strongly recommend closing all open applications and windows and disabling background applications before installing any of the software.

IMPORTANT: Please back up all of your files as a precaution before proceeding.

You should decide whether to perform an upgrade or a clean installation.

Clean Installation (You must have an existing Windows installation!)

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 Professional disk into the CD-ROM drive. Double-click SETUP.EXE in the CD-ROM directory, \english\win2000\pro. Select Install a new copy of Windows 2000 (Clean Installation) from the list.
  2. A hardware and software compatibility check is performed first. Ensure that your hardware and software are compatible with Windows 2000.
  3. Follow the instructions given by the Setup Wizard.

Upgrade Installation

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 Professional disk into the CD-ROM drive. Double-click SETUP.EXE in the CD-ROM directory, \english\win2000\pro. Select Upgrade to Windows 2000 (recommended) from the list.
  2. A hardware and software compatibility check is performed first. Ensure that your hardware and software are compatible with Windows 2000.
  3. Follow the instructions given by the Setup Wizard.

    Note: Windows 2000 Professional requires a product key. The product key will be supplied by the Site Administrator when a student checks out Windows 2000 Professional.
