Benedictine University received its third Howard hughes Medical Institute Award in 2000. The award is used for:

  • Student Research and Broadening Access to Science including the expansion of a collaborative interdisciplinary student and faculty research program with an emphasis on using peptides and computational and experimental tools to study the structural biology and surface interactions of select biological systems.
  • Faculty Development including the establishment of interdisciplinary faculty teams from science and education to develop and pilot an integrated problem-based science curriculum for elementary education majors that encompasses both content and methodologies.
  • Curriculum, Equipment and Laboratory Development including equipment for a dedicated laboratory to support the integrated problem-based science curriculum for elementary education majors and in-serice teacher workshops as well as equipment to be used for majors' labs and student research.
  • Precollege and other outreach programs, including summer workshops to increase the science teaching effectiveness of elementary educators by enabling them to model effective science teaching/learning practices in their own classrooms and prepare them to serve as mentors to student teachers.
