Funding history

  1. 1991 Grant - Benedictine University received its first HHMI grant in 1991 to strengthen its student and faculty research program, create a molecular biology teaching and research laboratory, and develop an access program for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences.

  2. 1996 Grant - The second HHMI grant was awarded in 1996. It supported the development of an intergrated introductory laboratory curriculum which replaced traditional introductory laboratories in biology, chemistry and physics; laboratory renovation to facilitate the collaborative learning taking place in the integrated laboratories; and the continued expansion of undergraduate research program.

  3. 2000 Grant - The third HHMI grant was awarded in 2000. It supported the expansion of a collaborative interdisciplinary student and faculty research program, development of interdisciplinary faculty teams from science and education to develop and pilot integration problem-based science curriculum for elementary education majors, equipment for a dedicated laboratory to support this science curriculum for elementary majors and in-service teacher workshops, and summer workshops to increase the effectiveness of elementary educators by enabling them to model effective sceince teaching/learning practices in their own classrooms.
