Academic Advising

The academic advising process is guided by the Statement on Academic Advising, which reads in part:

"At Benedictine University academic advising is grounded in Benedictine values and the University mission. It is an interactive process between the advisor and student and is supported by technology. The goal is to promote each student's academic, career and personal development.

Faculty and staff are committed to creating a decision-making framework through which students can identify and realize their educational goals. Although academic advising is a collaborative function of both student and advisor, the final responsibility for satisfying University and major requirements rests with the student."

New Student Advising - for incoming freshmen

Continuing Student Advising - for returning students
Upon transition from the New Student Advising Center, continuing students are assigned to a faculty advisor within their major department. Students may confirm their advising assignment through MyBenU.

All traditional age students must obtain their advisor’s approval prior to initial registration.  In addition, students who are on freshman status (less than 30 earned semester hours), transfer students in their first semester and students on academic probation are required to obtain advisor approval for any schedule changes following initial registration.  Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors may add and drop classes without specific advisor approval; however, academic advising is always encouraged.

Adult accelerated students are advised by a faculty member within their major department.  Adult students are not required to obtain an advisor’s approval prior to registration, but it is recommended.

Students who are on academic probation or continuing probation may be required to be advised by the Student Success Center while on probation.  The Student Success Center also advises students who are undecided about their major or who are in the process of changing majors.

The Student Success Center provides general advising information and guidance to continuing students whose advisor may not be available or where a matter of academic policy or procedure is involved.  The Student Success Center also provides information about the transferability of credit taken at other institutions after the student’s first term at Benedictine University, as well as procedures for taking classes as part of the West Suburban Consortium with Aurora University and North Central College.  The Student Success Center staff also works with students to explain procedures for requesting an incomplete grade, pursuing a grade appeal, resolving registration issues and taking a leave of absence from the university.

For additional information related to academic advising, including access to forms, documentation and major checklists, please see the Advising Matters page.
