EDITORIAL
POLICIES AND WRITER'S GUIDELINES
Thank you for your interest in writing for The Candor, the student-produced
publication of Benedictine University. We want to publish a variety
of quality articles for our print and/or online edition to supplement
what our regular staff is unable to cover. All prospective contributing
writers must first pitch a story idea to the editor for consideration.
Please do not write a story and submit it to the staff unless
the topic has been approved, because a regular staff reporter
may already be covering the story, it may not fit the theme of
the week’s publication or the content is not considered
newsworthy or appropriate. In general, to increase chances for
publication in The Candor, the article:
must be written in journalistic form (the inverted pyramid answering
the who, what, when, where, why and how questions)
must have attributions (at least two quotes from different sources)
must use objective language (third person pronoun and avoidance
of biased adjectives)
must be factually correct
must be proofread for spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors
(writers may have their articles checked at the Academic Resource
Center or receive feedback from The Candor adviser)
must be timely and relevant to the BU community
must meet the publication deadline
The staff has the right to edit the article for space, clarity,
objectivity and Associated Press style. Articles that are accompanied
by non-copyrighted photos or images are highly desirable. Articles
that do not conform to the above writing tips will either be returned
to the author for rewrites or not be published.
Interested writers are invited to attend regular staff meetings
on Tuesdays, 12:30 p.m., in Scholl 214 to volunteer to write articles
assigned by section editors for the week, pitch a story idea to
the editor and be part of the production planning process.
The Student Staff
The student staff plans, writes, edits and designs the entire
contents of the newspaper. Individual editors of each section
of The Candor assume responsibility for the content of their pages.
Ultimate responsibility for the timely production and content
of The Candor rests with the newspaper’s editor-in-chief.
Content
The editor-in-chief, in consultation with the adviser and The
Candor’s staff members, shall ensure that all content published
in The Candor upholds Benedictine University’s mission,
student development goals and Benedictine University community
standards as described within this Editorial Policy and interpreted
by Benedictine University’s Board of Trustees, President,
Executive Vice President, Provost and Student Media Board.
Section Editors’ and Editor-in-Chief’s Responsibilities
Section editors are responsible for ensuring that the material
on their pages upholds the standards outlined in this
Editorial Policy
All material that is published in The Candor should be sufficiently
researched and factually correct. All material should be signed,
with the exception of “The Candor’s View,” which
reflects the majority opinion of the editorial board. Section
editors are responsible for making a reasonable effort to determine
whether material submitted by staff members is accurate. The Candor’s
editor-in-chief, with guidance from The Candor’s adviser,
is ultimately responsible for ensuring that all material published
in The Candor is consistent with this Editorial Policy.
Letters
to the Editor
The Candor’s Opinion page editor is primarily responsible
for determining whether to publish letters to the editor from
The Candor’s readers or other individuals. All letters to
the editor must be signed by the writer when submitted to The
Candor. The Candor does not withhold letter writers’ names,
with the exception of extraordinary circumstances, defined as
circumstances that involve highly sensitive personal matters.
The Candor’s editor-in-chief and adviser will have the sole
authority to make the decision to withhold a writer’s name.
The Candor’s editor-in-chief and adviser do not have the
authority to withhold the writer’s name from the University
administration. No letter to the editor shall be published if
it contains material that is libelous, obscene, substantially
disruptive of the educational process or an invasion of privacy.
Letters that are personal attacks will not be published. The Candor
reserves the right to edit all letters for length, grammar, punctuation
and style.
