BU shows school spirit at Spread
the Red homecoming event

Students
and faculty gathered outside the Krasa Center from 11:30 to
1:30 p.m., Friday Sept. 28 to celebrate school spirit during
the “Spread the Red” event, sponsored by the Student
Athlete Advisory Committee (SACC).
SACC
felt it was important to provide these events for community
interactment. They wanted to take part in homecoming to let
the rest of Benedictine’s students and staff get to
know our student athletes.
“I am a big supporter of school spirit and campus involvement,”
said Sue Brumm, head men’s and women’s swim coach.
“It’s also nice for the campus community to get
to know the athletes and then maybe they will come and cheer
at a home competition. You can never have too many fans!”
“Spread the Red” consisted of a wide variety of
activities. These activities included cupcake eating contests,
dizzy bat races, balloon toss, tug of war and three-legged
races. The entire event was based on a point system that stemmed
from the competitions.
Each
time a team won an activity they gained a point. Whoever had
the most points at the end of the games won a trophy which
could be kept until next year’s “Spread the Red.”
Eagle athletes competed against other BU students and staff
in the fight for the trophy.
Students from all sports came out to support their team and
show their school spirit. Even some uninvited guests made
their way into the quad to join the fun.
“This
was a great turnout and it was really good to see all the
school spirit. I am not sure who invited the bees though,"
said Andrew Olson, senior elementary education major. "I
guess they just wanted to see what all the buzz was about.”
Wizard of Oz inspires homecoming
relay in the quad

Activities sponsored a Wizard Relay on Tuesday as an event
for Homecoming Week in the Krasa Quad. The relay consisted
of three different challenges: a potato sack race, tricycle
riding and eating donut holes.
The
event was timed and the three people who completed the challenge
the fastest won a gift card to the restaurant, Buffalo Wild
Wings. First place prize was a $25 gift card, second place
$15 and third place $5. When asked what was the hardest challenge,
the participants responded that eating the munchkin donuts
at the end was the hardest.
“The most challenging was riding the tricycles and eating
the donuts because I was out of breath,” said Pamela
Posey, a junior.
She was asked why she decided to take part in the relay; Posey
said “People don’t participate enough, so I decided
to participate."
The head of the planning for homecoming week, Sarah Schuster,
said she took the ideas for the relay from the Wizard of Oz.
“Munchkin land was the inspiration for all this,”
said Schuster.
The winners of the relay were Giancarlo Chavez who completed
the course in 48 seconds, Jeremy Swaw with 51 seconds and
Brock Riggi with 56 seconds. The relay was a part of several
campus events that took place during Homecoming week along
with Mr. BU and Canoe the Slough.
