Come out and sing with BU’s choir

Benedictine University has its very own co-ed choir. Benedictine’s choir is currently made up of 20 individuals, and the music department is hoping that more people, especially men, will come out and participate. Faculty and staff are also urged to come out and test their singing skills also.
“I really wanted to achieve working on my voice … I started singing last year, so it became a hobby. I joined the choir because I heard that they needed more men,” said freshman Rene Jorres.
“I enjoy singing in the choir,” said Kaleeya Furlow, a senior and choir member. “I enjoy it every year because the instructors make it enjoyable with their positiveness and determination.”
Being a strong singer is not an important factor because there is no audition process to go through. The choir currently has individuals ranging in singing experience from beginners to students majoring in voice.
As time spent within the choir expands, a person’s singing skills will improve. Also, choir members say, they will gain an understanding of how their vocal abilities work.
This year, the BU choir will be hosting a concert event at Benet Academy on April 11-13, 2008. The goal of the concert is to share music with devoted fans and to encourage more individuals to participate in the music programs that Benedictine offers.
“The most important component of the concert choir is to teach people how to sing better and to also have fun,” said Mark Stingley, voice instructor at BU.
Stingley, who has been an instructor at Benedictine since 2002, says that “my main focus on campus is as a voice instructor, and I feel I can contribute to the choir in that way, and I feel I can help people sing better regardless of their level.”
Weekly practices continue throughout both fall and spring semesters. Aspiring singers are encouraged to get involved prior to the beginning of the fall semester, but there are chances to get involved at any time.
