Manhattan Fire Protection District

Firefighter/Paramedic
Responsibilities:
Firefighter/Paramedic The Manhattan Fire Protection District will establish an eligibility list for the position of firefighter/paramedic. Applications will be available November 9th , 2009 through November 20th, 2009 inclusive, during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Manhattan Fire Protection District office located at 100 Park Road Manhattan, Illinois. Applicants must appear in person and show a drivers license as proper identification to obtain an application; one application per person; application fee $25.00. Applications, when completed, must be filed in person during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at the District office and must be filed no later than 4:00 p.m. on November 20, 2009. *Age. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and less than 35 years of age by application deadline unless otherwise exempt from age limitation by statute. *Medical Standards. Applicants are required to meet the standards adopted by NFPA. *Education. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. *Residency. Must be citizen and resident of the United States for a period of one year prior to the date of the examination. Any applicant appointed must become a resident of the boundaries established by the Manhattan Fire Protection District within one year of employment. *Additional Requirements. On the day of the orientation, the applicant shall provide a copy of his/her Fire Fighter II certification at the registration desk. At the time of job offer the applicant must provide a copy of his/her I.D.P.H. paramedic license. Applicants must have a valid CPAT Identification Card (not more than one (1) year old) at time of oral interview. *General. A mandatory orientation will be held at 7:00 p.m. on November 24, 2000 at the Manhattan Fire Station #1, 100 Park Road, Manhattan, Illinois. The testing process will be announced at this orientation. No one will be admitted after 7:00 p.m.

Patrol Officer
Responsibilities:
Enforce and administer the enforcement of park rules; regulations, state, federal and local statutes. Prepare field reports and required paperwork, in accordance with established procedures. Adhere to work schedules defined by the department using a rotating schedule including weekends and holidays. Follow instructions and directions given by the command staff. Respond to basic inquiries from Park Safety Officers and follow up as needed. Patrol the park and adjacent boundaries using a patrol car, cart, on foot or bicycle or with a dog as assigned. Respond to dispatch calls for routine and emergency situations. Direct traffic inside and outside the park, as assigned. Appear in court as necessary. Assume administrative responsibilities for assigned area(s), including, but not limited to: vehicle maintenance, uniforms, equipment, communications, Life Safety, and public relations. Follow appropriate safety and procedural rules. Keep work area and equipment in a clean and functional condition. Must represent the Society in a professional manner at all times. Open, close, and secure buildings and facilities; gates; and parking lots. Pick up and deliver monies between Cashier's Office and park locations. Provide positive public relations, and respond to inquiries and requests for information. Assist motorists with vehicular problems. Monitor facilities, parking, and adjacent properties for safety, hazards, and security. Maintain order and investigate suspicious activities of guests and employees. Determine course of action, reprimand or warn individuals, detain or expel from park, and/or arrest and book persons committing crimes in violation of applicable statutes, and, as appropriate to the situation. Transport arrested individuals to appropriate jurisdictions for further processing as necessary. Administer first aid treatment for injury or illness, including but not limited to: monitoring life signs, stabilizing victims, transporting individuals to hospitals via driving, or assisting in ambulance. Provide assistance in law enforcement and other assigned activities to local community police departments as requested. Monitor behavior and conditions of animal collection during night shift, and provide assistance as necessary to Society officials and keeper staff. Maintain required emergency medical certification and firearm qualification in good standing. Other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or other related field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required. Minimum 2 years security or loss prevention experience required. Minimum 1 year patrol officer experience preferred. Prior work experience at Brookfield Zoo with better-than-satisfactory performance preferred. Must complete and pass to minimum standards Police Academy training within one year of hire. Must attain certification of State of Illinois Emergency Medical Technician status within 1 year of hire, and maintain current certification. Valid Firearms Owners Identification Card required at time of hire. Ability to utilize common security and other department equipment, including, but not limited to: medical equipment, extrication, supplies, and other emergency equipment; typewriters, and computers. Ability to successfully interact with a diverse audience, maintain confidence and have an excellent rapport with co-workers and guests. Must represent the Society in a courteous, professional manner at all times; maintain excellent public relations, strong communication and collaboration skills. Valid driver’s license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. This is a full-time position which includes rotating weekends, evenings, and holidays as assigned.

Qualifications:
$15.00 non-refundable application fee;
U.S. Citizenship;
High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED);
Valid Driver's License;
Must be currently enrolled in a Paramedic (EMT-P) class, OR have completed an EMT-P class and currently in certification process, OR be a licensed/certified EMT-P;
Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card by application deadline. (CPAT cards considered valid if issued between 10/31/2008 and 10/31/2009. Licensed agencies listed below and on next page.);
Must be at least 21 years of age as of 10/31/09 and less than 35 years of age, or be less than 40 years of age at time of hire with proof of at least five (5) years credible service with an Illinois Fire Pension.
Successful completion probation period after hire. MUST obtain Illinois Firefighter II Certification, Illinois Paramedic License AND be registered with North Lake County EMS before the end of the probation period. Applicants who are certified Illinois paramedics at time of hire must successfully complete a 12-month probation period. Applicants who are NOT certified Illinois paramedics at time of hire are given up to 18 months probation in order to complete training.
Note: Prior to written exam, the Zion Police Department will conduct background checks on all applicants. Applicants who fail the background check will not be invited to participate in the written examination. Applicants will be notified by Public Safety Recruitment of their eligibility status prior to the written exam via email. Candidates are considered ineligible if, by the deadline, one or more of the minimum requirements was not met, if an online application is not completed, and/or if all required documents were not properly submitted. A financial background check will be conducted at time of conditional offer.
Salary: Salary for Firefighter/Paramedic May 1, 2009 to April 18, 2010.
Starting Salary: $54,627.69, Salary after seven years: $75,530.67

Work schedule: 24 hours on, and 48 hours off.
Vacation: 5 shifts after one year.
Holidays: 7 floating.
Hourly Reduction Days, 6 shifts
Sick time: 12 hours per month up to a maximum of 1680 hours.
