The U.S. Government Documents Collection

The Benedictine University Library has been a Congressionally designated depository for U.S. government documents since 1911. As a selective depository, the library currently receives approximately 26 % of the available items for selection from the Government Printing Office. These publications are made available to the Benedictine University academic community as well as the general public.
Most of our government publications are housed in other locations throughout the library - in the general circulating collection, the reference collection, the periodicals collection, the microfiche collection, and the instructional materials collection. Please consult the I-Share Online catalog or Periodical Holdings List for their exact location.

The government documents housed in this fourth floor area include CD-Roms, pamphlets, photographs, maps, and ephemeral items. Among the documents you will find in this collection are CIA maps, NASA reports and photographs, statistical data from the Census Bureau, the CDC, the FBI, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. All documents in this area are arranged on the shelves according to their SuDocs number. The Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) Classification System was designed specifically for United States government documents. It is a method of grouping government documents by the agency or department that created or issued the publication.

The government documents shelved in this area are in the process of being added to our online catalog. If you need assistance in locating an item in this collection, please as the librarian at the Reference Desk to help you or use the finding aids posted on our Government Documents Tutorial.
