Benedictine Library :
Borrowing Materials

You must complete a form to register to borrow materials and access electronic resources. You can download a copy of the form or request a copy at the Circulation Desk in the Library.

On-campus access to electronic resources is provided through the campus network. Access to licensed e-resources is restricted to faculty, staff and students and the bank of computers in the library for reference work. If you use a commercial Internet service provider you will be asked to provide your login and library ID number.

Loan Periods

  • For faculty, most library print materials from the Benedictine collection, other than juvenile and IMC books, circulate for sixteen weeks, with the possibility of renewal.

  • Audiovisual materials such as videos, CDs, and DVDs circulate for one week and can also be renewed.

  • Fines apply to faculty for lost and overdue items in the Benedictine collection as well as those borrowed through the Illinois Library Computer Systems Organization (ILCSO) and Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Fine Policies are listed below

Policies for Benedictine Library Overdue Fines

All library materials are stamped with a due date, and patrons are expected to return materials on time. Items must be renewed before the due date. Overdue notices are generated and mailed the first business day after the due date. The library will send two notices, followed by an invoice. Overdue notices are sent to patrons as a courtesy. Failure to receive an overdue notice does not release patrons from returning or renewing materials or from paying overdue fines.

  • General Collection Fines: Overdue fines are $5 for each item returned more than ten days late (or more than three days late, for one-week loans). If the overdue fine is paid at the time the item is returned, the fine is reduced to $2.50 per item. Nonpayment of fines may result in suspension of library accounts.

  • Fines for Illinet Online Fees: Patrons at Benedictine University can request library materials from 65 libraries in the ILCSO system through the Illinet Online catalog. Fines incurred for items borrowed through Illinet Online must be paid directly to the lending institution. The Benedictine Library cannot accept or clear fines from other ILCSO institutions. Non-payment of fines from Illinet libraries may result in suspension of library accounts.

  • Fines for interlibrary loan books: Fines and fees for late or lost interlibrary loan materials are governed by the policies of the lending library. Patrons are responsible for fines and fees for Interlibrary Loan items. These charges can be significant in some cases. As with Benedictine University items, please make every effort to return or renew interlibrary loan materials by the date indicated on the date due slip.
