"World War I had little effect on the daily life at the abbey and its school in Lisle. The abbey farm assured the students and monks an ample supply of beef, pork and chicken, as well as milk, eggs, and vegetables; there were no shortages. Being 'out in the country' insulated the abbey and school from the effects of the war on the home front; they were free to pursue their efforts to expand and to improve. With the end of the war they now had the peace they sought when they moved from the city to the country, and peace from the world besides."
