Dr. Toussant served for two years in the U.S.
Navy with the Beach Masters unit in California where the Army and Marine
Corps were trained in amphibious landing. Dr. Toussaint explains:
"Teaching the recruits required a lot of training as amphibious landings can be very dangerous." In addition to training, the Beach Masters
brought ashore tanks, truck supplies and fuel for machinery. They set
up field hospitals, supply depots, and command posts to direct boat
traffic with signal lights. They also broadcast surf reports to the
fleet.
