Happy New Year! Welcome to our new Benedictine community parents who are joining us for the spring semester. This is a time when your student will be encountering new challenges. They will be attending a new set of classes. He/she should be reminded that they can get academic and career help from the Academic and Career Enrichment (ACE) Center. There they will find a number of learning specialists in writing, math and science. For additional information, please have them contact ACE@ben.edu or call (630) 829-6041. It is always best to seek help rather than fall behind and try to do it alone.
It is never too late to join a student organization. If your student did not get involved with an organization last semester, he/she can still take advantage of them. Students can explore clubs and organizations by reaching out to Danny Turano, coordinator of Student Involvement, at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by dropping by his office in Krasa Center, Room 010. This experience will provide them a sense of belonging and will build memories they can fondly look back on. Benedictine shows its commitment to diversity and involvement by having nearly 60 student organizations and clubs offering a wide spectrum of different ways to get involved. There is something in which everyone can participate. Students receive emails alerting them to events happening on campus. Please encourage them to read their emails as well as the banners that the various groups make available around campus, which provide times and places. If your student tells you there is nothing to do on campus, challenge them to make the effort and their experience will be enriched.
It has been a great semester in Campus Ministry. Campus Ministry sponsored its 24th Koinonia Retreat in November. Koinonia focuses on the importance of community and how we can grow closer to God while journeying with one another. The student retreat leaders shared their faith journey and led activities and reflection time for their peers. We will have applications available in the coming weeks for students who are interested in being leaders for our next retreat. Our Campus Ministry Cor students created Finals Week Survival Kits for their peers and handed them out prior to exams. Within each kit, Cor created invitations to our sacred spaces on campus, the St. Benedict Chapel and the Interfaith Prayer Room, for when students are looking to find space to pray, meditate and contemplate. This past November, we were able to further our commitment to peace by installing a peace pole on campus. It states “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in 12 different languages. The next time you are visiting campus, stop by the Krasa quad and check it out.
We are looking forward to the spring semester as Campus Ministry will be hosting the University’s first Interfaith Retreat. Students will be given an opportunity to learn about different faiths, their own faith tradition and how to be in dialogue with those of different faith traditions. Our MOSAIC (Movement Of Students Achieving Interfaith Collaboration) group is playing a vital role in this retreat. Applications will also be available to our two national weeklong STEP (Serving Together Engaging our Purpose) opportunities to Misericordia in Chicago during spring break and in Baldwin, Mich., in May. Our prayer in Campus Ministry is that we will continue to strengthen our Benedictine community on campus and beyond through listening to one another with love and charity. St. Benedict reminds in “The Rule of St. Benedict,” “Listen, and attend with the ear of your heart.” (Prologue).

A reminder to new students and transfer students in the spring semester: Student Health Forms and a copy of your immunization record are due before the first day of class. Submit the required health information to the Student Health Services office in Krasa Center, Room 116; in person; via U.S. Postal Service; or by fax at (630) 829-6035. Student Health Services is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., during the academic year. The office is staffed by two licensed registered nurses. The physician, Robert Rozner, M.D., a Benedictine alumnus, is on campus on Wednesday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. to see students who are ill.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BENEDICTINE MEN’S SOCCER
The Benedictine University men’s soccer team made history in 2016. The Eagles won their first-ever Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship to advance to the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship. The Eagles traveled to Kenosha, Wis., where they defeated host Carthage College (Wis.) and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater by 2-1 scores to advance to the third round, a first for the program. Benedictine made the short trip to Chicago, Ill. to take on University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in the quarterfinals, battling to a 1-1 draw after regulation before falling in double overtime.
I know I’m a little late in writing to you, but I was really busy fall semester and I imagine you would want me to prioritize my schoolwork. I’ve been studying very hard this year and I’m proud to tell you that I’ve raised all of my grades. The Peer Tutoring Center in the Library has been a great help, and I also met a few times with the Writing Learning Specialist and the Math Learning Specialist in the Academic and Career Enrichment (ACE) Center. I’m also thinking about my professional development, and I am hoping to attend this year’s Illinois Small College Placement Association “Career Fest” so I can start networking with employers. I think I’m ready to start applying for internships, and I want to go to this career fair in February to get a better idea of what’s out there. If your sleigh is still up and running, could you help me out with a few things? Here’s my wish list:
1. I need $10 to attend CareerFest on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. The deadline to pre-register is Wednesday, February 8, and I would have to pay $20 at the door if I do not register early. Two of my BenU friends said they received second interviews and internship offers after attending last year’s fair.
2. A nice leather or leather-like folder to carry extra résumés, networking cards, a notepad and pen.
3. A great outfit for networking and job interviews. I need to look my professional best.
4. A new laptop.
5. Ear plugs for studying.

Continuing students may return to the residence halls beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 15. ID access to buildings will not be available prior to that time. All students must be registered for the spring semester on a full-time basis prior to returning to campus.
New transfer students may move into their designated locations beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 15.
On Monday, January 16, the University observes the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. There are no semester classes occurring on that day, but all University offices will be open. Spring semester classes will officially begin on Tuesday, January 17.
Being primarily a freshman residence hall, there are typically some kinks that need to be worked out during the first few weeks of the semester due to the adjustment period of the residents coming from high school. Although there have been some hiccups, the residents in Ondrak Hall have shown a tremendous growth that is demonstrated through their maturity and increased independence. Each year, developing a strong community within the hall can be a challenging task as a result of a new population moving in the building. Our efforts to formulate a cohesive bond among the residents have been successful, which is illustrated through our attendance at Resident Life programs. Events such as paper airplane contests, Male Etiquette Night, cookouts, Jello Shots with the Cops Alcohol Awareness and Laundrypalooza have strengthened the bond between each resident and have also highlighted on co-curricular learning. The expectations for next semester are high as each student now has at least one semester under their belt.
This past semester, Jaeger residents have been able to adjust to the social, academic and personal life that has created a sense of community. The community that has been built among residents is a strong one. Residents have been able to call Jaeger their home away from home. As the Jaeger staff, we have made it our mission to make every resident feel welcome and have taken their programming suggestions to heart. This past semester, we have had some great programs that encouraged residents to mingle with one another and express their creative side. Some examples of successful programs have been Tie-Dye Pillow Cases, Spa Night, Roommate Game, a Keychain Program, Pumpkin Mason Jars and a grill out with Ondrak Hall. If your student has not attended any programs, encourage them to do so this semester. With the success Jaeger Hall has had this past semester, the staff has high hopes for the second semester to be as great as and even better than the first semester. Overall, Jaeger has always been known as the hall that creates long-lasting friendships and will continue to strive to achieve nothing but the best.
Last semester, Neuzil Hall residents transitioned from their freshman year in Ondrak and Jaeger and began to get a taste of the new challenges that present themselves as upperclassmen. Some of those challenges include living in community with the opposite gender, having additional roommates and a greater sense of independence. The Neuzil staff has been there for the residents for any social, personal and academic advice to ensure the transition is smooth. We have hosted programs targeted for our co-ed building in an attempt to enhance the classroom learning experience while learning about skills and abilities that are practical in the real world after graduation. Programs such as Benedictine Jeopardy, Alcohol Awareness, DIY Air Fresheners, How Well Do You Know Your Roommate and Winterize Your Ride are some of our favorite examples. The Neuzil Hall staff has many more programs planned and is looking forward to another productive semester at Benedictine.
In previous years, Founders’ Woods has had a reputation of being a somewhat isolated community. This year, it has been our goal to rebuild the image and community. Building a community in Founders’ is about more than programming, it’s about showing the residents you are there for them when they need you. The Residence Life staff has worked diligently to report any broken or damaged items in the apartments so that they can be fixed in a timely matter. This has created a partnership with the residents and an improved look to our facilities, which boosts morale. Additionally, we have hosted many events such as tailgating, Slip N' Slide Kickball, a fishing tournament, Stargazing Social, Cubs Watch Party, the Haunted Trail and an Escape Room. These events are designed to be diverse and welcoming to all of the residents, whether they are into mind puzzles, art, sports or current events. This increases opportunities for residents to interact and we have seen a large increase in attendance. We have many more exciting events to come during the spring semester and are excited for the residents to return.
