Catholicism and the Benedictine Tradition have a 2,000 year history of teaching by passing down the tradition.  The TANAK, or Hebrew Scriptures which we Christians called the "Old Testament" was the writing down of what was the oral tradition of the Israelite peoples that we now call  the "Jews."

The Council of Hippo, 393 A.D., issued the first Canon of Scriptures which we call the "New Testament".  The Christians then took the Scriptures off of large scrolls and cut them into pieces and bound them on one end.  We call this "the Book" or "The Bible."  This was done to make the Scriptures portable so that we could facilitate learning.
