Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Event Description:

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Since April, 2018, Benedictine University has held It’s On Us Week of Action the 3rd week in April to provide opportunities to move from awareness to action. This year, we will be providing several opportunities to take action this week (April 19-23rd).

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®

This International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault, and Gender-Violence is an opportunity for men on campus to show solidarity with survivors and speak out against violence in our community. This year the walk will be virtual. Students living on campus can pick up shoes outside Krasa Student Center Suite 175 Monday-Thursday from 12:20-1:20PM. If you are not on campus, you can borrow shoes from a family member or friend, or make a sign to hold during your walk. Show your walk with photos and Map My Walk. Tag us on Instagram @benupeaceteam or email them to Dr. Steven Burgess, Chair of the Engaging Men sub-committee of the PEACE Team at sburgess@ben.edu.

Violence Prevention Messaging Contest

One of the most powerful ways that we can engage in violence prevention is through bystander intervention. We are calling on all of our creative students to share a drawing, photograph, painting, poem, or any other expression of art to show how they can intervene before, during or after violence occurs to prevent violence in our community.

Campus Climate Survey

The Campus Climate Survey is a way for Universities to gather information about what our campus culture is like and whether students are able to access the resources and programs available to them. We have conducted the Campus Climate Survey on Gender-Based Violence since Spring 2018 and use this information to improve the services that we offer both for gender-based violence prevention and response.  This year the survey was created in collaboration with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force.

Our Week of Action events will conclude with an event on Saturday, April 24th at 3PM CST with the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago and Congressman Bill Foster to raise awareness about the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), myths and facts about sexual violence, and how our community can advocate for laws that prevent violence and support survivors in our community. The event can be viewed on Congressman Foster’s Facebook page here.
