The Benedictine University Library teamed up with the Drama Club to put on a dramatic reading of a section of The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. This was the Kick off event for Benedictine University library's participation in the Big Read Grant awarded to Columbia College in Chicago,IL. The Benedictine University Drama Club read Chapter 18, "The Fall Guy" in which the main character, Sam Spade works on convincing the others that they need a fall guy to give to police. Monsieur Mason was center stage as the classic Detective Sam Spade with Brigid O'Shaughnessy's (Aubree O'Conner) furtive glances and expression adding to the text. Gutman, traditionally the "fat man" was portrayed by slim Sam Venezia whose added padding added irony to character. Cairo (Demetrius Mitchell), Wilmer (M'Jean Mason) and Spade portrayed entertaining fight scenes that added power to the written word. The Narrator (Jonah Deffenbaugh) tied the story all together while creating a casual on the side of the action. Actors and audience alike were delighted to bring Hammet's work to life.
