Benedictine University Mesa is located in Maricopa County, where almost 40% of the population speaks Spanish. The Spanish major at BenU emphasizes cultural and communicative competence that will enable you to use Spanish in a professional environment and pursue a career in such areas as government, business, advertising, law, journalism, the sciences, the arts, education, or health care. Our small class sizes allow our faculty to provide thorough feedback and craft their classes to the specific needs of the students. Each student has the opportunity to develop fluency in the Spanish language, to gain an understanding of Hispanic cultures, to learn to write effectively, and to otherwise respond to the cultural and linguistic challenges of the United States in the 21st century.
My study abroad experience has changed me in so many ways. Being away from home and my family has taught me to become self aware about my decisions and my relationships with others. I’m not the same person I was three months ago. Meeting new people from all over the world, and traveling and learning about different cultures has shaped me tremendously. The skills I’ve learned through traveling and the different classes I’ve been taking while in Spain have prepared me for law school. I am now confident in my decision to pursue my doctoral degree after graduation and become an immigration lawyer. I can’t thank my professors enough for pushing me to study abroad and allowing me to find myself.” - MARIA CAMPOS-TELLO, C'20
Benedictine Mesa offers numerous opportunities and scholarships to fund a student’s desire to study abroad. Gain first-hand experience of not only how a Spanish degree can impact your future, but also how you see the world.
As part of the curriculum, students are required to take the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Language exam, putting them one step ahead of other Spanish majors upon graduation.
Students can choose to attain a Medical Spanish concentration. Careers in the medical field are always growing and professionals with a Spanish degree are uniquely prepared for the market place.
