Volleyball splits in Day 1 at IWU Tournament

Benedictine's volleyball team earned a split of its two matches on the first day of the Illinois Wesleyan University/Barker Fall Classic tournament. Overall, the Eagles are now 2-4 on the year. To open the tourney, Benedictine was felled by host Illinois Wesleyan, 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17). In match two of the day, the Eagles avenged last weekend's loss to Dominican University with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) sweep of the Stars. In the IWu match, sophomore Kayla Leyden (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward's H.S.) had 12 kills and 12 digs. Teammate Sarah Porod (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West H.S.) had six kills and four blocks. Senior Amanda Distasio (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley H.S.) and junior Sarah Ruzicka had 18 and eight digs, respectively. In the Dominican victory, The trio of Ruzicka, Leyden and junior Katie McGuire (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo Community H.S.) led the assault. Ruzicka booked 12 kills, while Leyden and McGuire added 10 kills apiece. Benedictine will continue play in the Barker Fall Classic on Saturday versus the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (12:15 p.m.) asnd Eureka College (2:30 p.m.).
