Benedictine University at Mesa invites the public to a holiday celebration and open house at its downtown Mesa campus.
The open house will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19 at Gillett Hall, located at 225 E. Main St., site of the former South Side Hospital. Community members with a connection to South Side Hospital are invited to attend and share their history.
“We want the community to again experience the historical and personal connection this location has to them,” said Michael Carroll, Mesa branch campus president. “We want to show them what of that history we have retained within our academic building, Gillett Hall, and what improvements we have made toward educating their children and perhaps their children’s children as we work together to prepare the next generation of learners and leaders.”
City of Mesa District 4 Councilman Chris Glover, who played a major role in bringing a Benedictine campus to the city, will host the holiday event.
Gillett Hall – a building that fostered a strong bond among residents when it housed Southside Hospital – is now one of the most advanced educational facilities in the Southwest. It features nine classrooms, including a nutrition lab featuring kitchenettes with residential appliances, an interactive classroom with flexible furniture, a computer lab and three general classrooms. Among the sustainable features are automatic lighting shutoffs, recycled material and energy-efficient lamps.
Other amenities include a chapel/prayer room open to all faiths, a small café, and a school spirit store where students can purchase Benedictine wear. Gillett Hall also features ample parking, easy access to public transportation and is within walking distance to many of downtown Mesa’s shops and restaurants – helping the University fulfill its mission to bring a values-based Catholic and Benedictine education to the heart of Mesa.
