Benedictine-Mesa moved one step closer in its quest to repeat as national champions by sweeping past No. 10 Lourdes (Ohio), 25-22, 25-17, 25-21, in its second match of Pool B play at the 2021 NAIA Men's Volleyball Championship at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
FROM THE CAL PAC:
The Redhawks, 17-0 and ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, advance to tomorrow's semifinal round, where they will meet No. 6 Vanguard at 2:00 pm PST. BenU played at Vanguard in back-to-back matches back in February when the Redhawks earned a closely played four-set win and came back the next day to an even closer five-set victory.
The winner of the BenU-Vanguard matchup will move into the championship match, which will take place on Saturday, April 24, at 3:00 pm PST. The Redhawks are on a course that could lead them to a showdown with the only other undefeated program in the NAIA, No. 1 Grand View (Iowa), currently 23-0 and playing Missouri Valley later today for a semifinal spot.
Against Lourdes, BenU again dominated on offense. For the second match in a row, the Redhawks eclipsed the previous NAIA championship record for team attack percentage of .301, set by Missouri Baptist in 2019. Against MBU on Tuesday, the Redhawks shattered that mark with a sizzling .383 attack percentage, and topped it again on Thursday against the Grey Wolves with a .303 mark. Landon Fuller (SO/Tempe, Ariz.) led the team with 13 kills with only two errors, giving him a .458 hitting percentage, and Charles Pollnow (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) finished with 12 kills and only three errors, hitting at a .346 clip. As a team, BenU had 43 kills against only 13 errors in three sets.
