Internship and Experiential Learning Fair, October 29, 2015, 11:30-2:30

Looking for an internship, volunteering, service learning or study abroad opportunities? Do you want to stand out and "B" competitive and marketable from other candidates? Add internships and volunteering to your resume!

WHAT IS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING? Learning through experience! Experiential learning is a process through which students develop skills and understand their values from experiences outside a traditional classroom setting. Our goal is to promote personal and professional development by utilizing a holistic approach including experiential learning, and educate through the career planning process by encompassing a variety of activities such as internships, job shadowing, informational interviews, service learning, research, study abroad, and other creative and professional work experiences.

Attend the Internship and Experiential Learning Fair on Thursday, October 29th from 11:30 - 2:30 p.m. in Krasa ABC and D to see all of the variety of opportunities available to you.

1. RSVP in the Benedictine Virtual Career Center for the event.
2. Show up with your best smile, a strong, firm handshake and lots of copies of your resume.
3. Ask lots of questions!
4. Upload your resume in the Benedictine Virtual Career Center for review and critiquing from a career advisor before the event. You can print several copies of these approved resumes and bring to the event to to prospective employers and organizations!

  1. Go to the ISCPA Online Career Center.
  2. Upload your resume in plenty of time for it to e reviewed, revised, and approved by Friday, September 25, 2015. Application period begins on September 14th.
  3. Review all positions carefully and apply/submit your approved resume only to those you would accept if the position were offered to you. You must submit a resume to each position in which you have an interest.
Candidates will be notified of interview selection status.

Fall Interview day gives you the potential for multiple interviews in one convenient location. This event is available to you because Benedictine University is a member of Illinois Call College Placement Association (ISCPA).

Experiential Learning - Why Do I Need this to Get a Job? - How can you get an insider's point of view into a certain industry or occupation? How do you know if you've chosen the right career path? Talk to people who have done it already and ask thoughtful questions, and see them in action in their own workplace. We'll discuss how to approach professionals of interest, sample questions to ask, and what can be gained through life changing experiential learning experiences such as informational interview and job shadows.

LinkedIn and Online Networking - Create a well organized LinkedIn profile and learn how to network online successfully with professionals in your areas of interest.

Land the Perfect Internship! - For today's college students and graduates, it's more important than ever to have hands-on experiences in your field. We'll talk about how to search for and find meaningful internships so you're better prepared for and more competitive in the workforce.

Making Your "Major" Decision - Accounting or anthropology . . . biology or bilingual journalism . . . chemistry or computer science . . . Sometimes we need help with those "ABCs." We need tools to ask ourselves the right questions so we feel confident in our choices. If you're not certain what course of study to pursue, join us for this session of self-exploration and discovery!

Nail the Interview - Preparing for a professional interview for an internship, job or graduate school? If your answer is yes, or even maybe, to any or all of the above, join us for this workshop and get a jump start on your interview preparation and professional story-telling skills!

Navigating a Job Fair - Job and internship fairs can be a great way to connect with employers, research positions of interest, and increase your potential to get an interview by making a positive impression. Join us to learn how to maximize your experience and how to best prepare for and perform at a career fair.

Networking 101 & Job Search Strategies - Is there any truth to the saying "it's all about who you know" in the job search? Yes, there is. Join us for this workshop to learn various methods to build and sustain your network and develop effective job search strategies.

Resume & Cover Letter Writing - Learn how to write a competitive resume and cover letter, your essential tools in the job and internship search. This workshop focuses primarily on resume writing with an introduction to cover letter writing, providing additional helpful resources and next steps.

Writing Personal Statements - Thinking about going to graduate school? Join Writing Learning Specialist, Anne Marie Smith to learn how to craft a Personal Statement at this workshop. Don't wait until the last minute! Even the best writers need help with them! Learn what to include and what to exclude; find out about common errors and how to avoid them; and explore campus and online resources.

Executive Status Network

This community networking group meets the first Monday of each month on Benedictine University's campus from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The Executive Status Network is a job searching networking group. Their members include business professionals from varied backgrounds who are employed or seeking employment. A typical member would be a manager, technical specialist or business professional who is accustomed to leadership responsibilities. The purpose is to enhance job search capabilities by sharing information with other members. 
  • Serving the Western suburbs for nearly 20 years
  • Open to all work disciplines and levels
  • Focus on getting participants (unemployed or underemployed) moving in the right direction
  • Provide an understanding of today's search tools (elevator speech, handbill, local job clubs and other resources)

Student Employment Fair

The Career Development Center is sponsoring a Student Employment Job Fair for students interested in filling student worker positions during the school year. The job fair will be held from 11:30-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2 in the Krasa Center, Rooms ABC. 
Additionally, we will have three breakouts from 12:30am to1:20pm during the fair that you can attend. Each breakout will last approximately 20 minutes, allowing you to attend two breakouts of your choice. The breakouts are as follows:

  • Making Your "Major" Decision
  • Understanding Your Values
